Stop Staring at a Blank Screen: How to Brief Claude Like an Editor

A glowing notepad with checklist items representing an editorial brief

The single biggest factor in the quality of AI-generated content is not the AI — it’s the brief. Editors know this instinctively. A seasoned editor hands a writer a brief so detailed that the article almost writes itself. You need to develop the same skill with Claude.

The Four-Part Brief

Every effective Claude prompt for blog content should cover four things:

  1. Topic and angle — not just “email marketing” but “why small e-commerce stores should prioritise email over Instagram in 2026”.
  2. Target reader — “a small business owner with no marketing background” produces very different content to “a growth marketer at a Series A startup”.
  3. Tone and voice — conversational, authoritative, witty, practical. Give Claude a reference: “write like a knowledgeable friend, not a textbook.”
  4. Structural requirements — word count, number of sections, whether to include a list or a CTA, H2/H3 hierarchy.

Weak vs Strong Prompts

Weak: “Write about productivity apps.” This gives Claude nothing to work with. The output will be generic and forgettable.

Strong: “Write a 700-word post for freelance designers titled ‘Five Productivity Apps That Actually Survived My Workflow’. Tone: personal and honest, like a review from a working designer. Include one tool that surprised you. End with a CTA to leave a comment.”

Save Your Best Prompts

Once you find a prompt structure that consistently produces content you’re proud of, save it as a template. You can ask Claude to help you build a prompt library tailored to your site’s different content types: how-to posts, opinion pieces, product reviews, roundups. The upfront investment pays back every time you sit down to write.

Mastering the brief is the highest-leverage skill in your Claude + WordPress toolkit. Everything else — images, SEO, automation — builds on getting this right first.
